The bauta, tabarro, moretta, and gnaga are among the most famous masks and costumes of the Venice Carnival. “Buongiorno Siora Maschera” was the greeting heard throughout Venice’s alleys, canals, and squares. Wearing a mask allowed people to hide, at least once a year, their identity, gender, and social class.
