DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT:
- History of the Bautta, Moretta and Plague Doctor masks
These were the most important masks in Venice during the time of La Serenissima. By showing famous paintings and old prints, we will present how masks were used as part of Venetian life. Participants will travel in time to find out about this unique Venetian lifestyle when masks were used daily for more than 6 months per year.
2. We will show how to make a traditional Venetian mask using the traditional technique
In a plaster mould, we make the first layer of the paper-mache mask, using a special type of paper. From this demonstration, participants will understand the complete process of mask making. Following this, we will present several surprising techniques used to decorate masks.
Throughout the presentation, there will be a live projection on a large screen showing the demonstration from a close perspective.
3. History of Venetian Carnival
By showing historical images, we explain the meaning of Carnival, its social relevance, and its political meaning. We will talk thoroughly about Giovedì Grasso (Fat Thursday), the celebration that truly captures the total essence of Carnival.
Please bring your online registration on the day of the event.
