For eight nights, along the Grand Canal in Venice, “Casanova’s Reveries” will take the stage—an event conceived and directed by Antonia Sautter, dedicated to the extraordinary “talent for life” of Giacomo Casanova, whose 300th birth anniversary is being celebrated this year.

“Dinner Shows are like treasure chests filled with surprises to be experienced with wonder and imagination,” says Massimo Checchetto, artistic director of the Carnival, “capturing the very essence of Carnival in a magical Venetian night.”

At the center of the stage will be a timeless Casanova, seemingly dozing or, more likely, lost in reverie. The celebration begins as the lights illuminate a dreamlike parade of memories, events, and characters crowding his mind—reinterpreted with a pop-theatrical flair by the artistic vision of Antonia Sautter, who shares some insight into the concept:

“I am honored to have the opportunity to explore, even through costume design, the countless nuances of such an emblematic and fascinating figure as Casanova. I have envisioned him as a ‘dreamer’ to stage a surreal dialogue between this charismatic 18th-century Venetian intellectual and his city—forever his perfect accomplice and the favorite stage for his adventures. My Casanova shares the energy of the character brought to life in music by his friend Mozart, along with a touch of the languid poetry found in Fellini’s vision. The Venice of his dreams is a queen who knows how to wear and enhance every facet of her most seductive citizen. At Ca’ Vendramin, guests of the Dinner Show will discover—through Casanova’s dreams—that Venice is a thousand things: aquatic, carnivalesque, alluring, mysterious, cultured, and, always and unfailingly, unique.”
