Carnival is the most eagerly awaited event of the year in Venice: ten days of parading in masks and costumes, of shows, music, games and colours. The city goes crazy and fills with jubilant crowds of people. In St. Mark’s Square and in the thousands of other squares there is a host of theatrical performances, masquerade parades, concerts and historical re-enactments, entertainment for children and wild ball nights as well as gastronomic tastings and other sensory experiences.
In the wake of the success of previous editions, let us gain more information about the world through our 5 senses: sight, touch, hearing, taste, smell. The world is above all our 6th sense; it is in our minds. The format for the Venice Carnival already bears the promise of something new and different in the title: Sensation, 6 senses for 6 districts.
The senses will be expressed through elements of scenography, performances by theatrical groups and artists, concerts and light design installations. San Polo will be the district dedicated to sight, Santa Croce to smell, Dorsoduro to hearing, Castello to touch and Cannaregio to taste. St. Mark will be the sensory, imaginative and thinking centre of the City that embraces the mind – a real intersection of all the senses, in all senses. St. Mark will, therefore, be the pulsating centre of everything, a mind place and sensorial mainstay, hosting the main stage on which musical, theatrical and artistic performances will be alternating. Great events for the new Carnival of Venice 2010.
The most popular and awaited traditional event of 2010 will be performed by an exceptional Angel: Bianca Brandolini D’Adda. A historical parade by C.E.R.S. – the European Consortium of Historical Re-enactments- with the participation of Associazione Amici del Carnevale di Venezia and Associazione Internazionale per il Carnevale di Venezia.
The flight of the Donkey will take place in Mestre on St. Valentine’s Day. The protagonist of the amusing parody of the flight of the Angel will be Italian actress, Monica Zuccon, who will descend from the civic tower to Piazza Ferretto, Mestre.
To celebrate the traditional Festa delle Marie, a procession of 12 young Venetian ladies will be accompanied by the historical parade. The event will be presented by Prince Maurice and will include the participation of Chiarastella Serravalle. Directed by Bruno Tosi. Organized by: CERS – The European Consortium of Historical Re-enactments, Associazione Amici del Carnevale and Associazione Internazionale per il Carnevale.
The colourful water procession and the flavours of the district will give life to the popular and traditional Venetian Festival in Rio di Cannaregio. This festival is very much loved for its music, dancing and renowned Venetian specialties offered by the restaurateurs of the district.
The project has been coordinated with the collaboration of Coordinamento delle Remiere and A.E.P.E.
