The Carnival of colours, the colours of the Carnival.
Venice is the only city in colour before the invention of colour: Canaletto, Guardi, Bellotto, Tiziano, Giorgione, Bellini and Veronese perfected the art of perspectival and colour painting in the lagoon. It could not be otherwise: there is no city in the world where the colour spectrum gives its best reflecting on the water of the canals and the lagoon. The Carnival of Venice 2013 is the Carnival of colours because each colour communicates and provokes an emotion, and each one of us associates a mood with it.
Colours are the most subjective things there are, and with the spirit of Carnival they share the infinite variety and number of costumes, which in turn correspond to our infinite attitudes.
Colour is the result of a synthesis of perceptual stimuli and neurological characteristics on the basis of which the body reacts to the physical nature that surrounds us. Imprisoned inside the retina, the colour sensors transfer colour vision to the brain, reacting to the wavelength of a ray of light, which, after hitting an object or a person, reaches our eye.
The theories of colour tell us that everything we see does not depend solely on its nature (the material, the surface, etc.) but that it depends on the way we react to visual stimuli. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. And so is Carnival, where everything is permitted in the name of a temporary suspension of roles in which the observer is left with the right and duty not to define the characters of the people who wear a costume but only the mask they wear. To put on a mask, a symbolic action of embodying the Carnival spirit, is how we can sum up this liberation.
The Carnival of Venice will be opening in Cannaregio with an extraordinary and unique show on the water, “Metamorphosis Aquaticae” by the French company Ilotopie, which takes us into a world of dreams and poetry with this unprecedented show for Venice, all staged on the water. Afterwards, Rio di Cannaregio will be beating to the rhythm and music of the Dixie Funk Parade in concert. To open this magical evening, the Circateatro Company takes guests into a dreamlike atmosphere, with the show on stilts “Sogno di una strampolata notturna”.
The Angel 2013 is the winner of last year’s “Festa delle Marie” 2012, Marta Finotto.
The protagonist of the second flight on Fat Sunday is Francesca Piccinini, a player of the Italian volleyball team, who will be wearing a nineteenth-century hussar costume, created by master Francesco Briggi of the Pietro Longhi Atelier.
The 12 young Venetian ladies return to the Square for the Award Ceremony and coronation of this year’s winning “Maria”, Julia Nasi.
After the success of the 2012 Carnival, the Winged Lion, the symbol of Venice, will be descending from the bell tower, flying over the crown to the notes of St. Mark’s anthem performed by Orchextrana.
The traditional event in Mestre, a parody of the Flight of the Angel in St. Mark’s Square, will take place with magic pipers who enchant young and old alike, waiting for the friendly guest to “fly” down from the tower to the rhythms of the Berimbau Band.
The contestants of this competition compete with the creativity, colours and imagination of their Carnival costumes. Also on stage, as part of the parade, there will be traditional historical dances by the Associazione Overdream, music by the Murga “Saltimbranco” and a show by “Moriss e i Pic”.
