Giacomo Casanova: A Venetian Witness to His Time

Libertine, gambler, scientist, writer, and much more. Born in Venice, he traveled through both the great and small cities of the Republic and lived in the most prestigious courts of 18th-century Europe, leaving behind a remarkable testimony of his time.
A special double event hosted by the artisan workshop Ca’ Macana Original in its atelier at Dorsoduro 3170, scheduled on Saturday, February 22 and Saturday, March 1, at 5 p.m.
To celebrate Venice Carnival 2025, historian Giovanni Della Mora will guide us through the most significant moments and lesser-known anecdotes of Giacomo Casanova’s life. From his rebellious youth to his adventures across Europe’s grand courts, leading up to his final years — which coincided with the fall of the centuries-old Republic of Venice — his story will unfold as a vivid portrait of an unrepeatable era, told through the eyes of one of its most fascinating witnesses.
Following the talk, the master artisans of Ca’ Macana will present a live demonstration on the making of traditional Venetian masks, showcasing various techniques and materials.
